Building climate-resilient communities requires strong partnerships, evidence-based policies and meaningful citizen engagement. As part of its commitment to advancing climate action, Baridi Kwa Baridi Women CBO joined county government officials and members of the Busia Community of Practice (CoP) for a dialogue convened by the Devolution and Climate Change Adaptation Programme (DaCCA) to strengthen climate change governance and enhance public service delivery.
The meeting served as a platform for stakeholders to openly discuss the current state of climate change governance in the county. It also focused on strengthening climate change resilience among poor smallholder farming communities in the Lake Victoria Basin. Bringing together members of the Advocacy Working Group, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Working Group and Smallholders Working Group, the forum created an opportunity to review findings from the climate policy analysis, identified existing gaps affecting climate governance and service delivery and explored practical, locally driven solutions to address these challenges.
A key highlight of the meeting was the review of the climate policy analysis, which enabled participants to identify critical gaps affecting climate action at the county level. Discussions revealed the need to strengthen climate governance structures, improve monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) systems, enhance public participation in climate decision-making and expand climate change education to empower communities with knowledge and skills to adapt to climate-related challenges.
A major outcome of the dialogue was the development of clear action points to guide future collaboration among county departments, civil society organizations and community stakeholders. The discussions emphasized the importance of translating policy into action through coordinated implementation, continuous learning and accountability mechanisms that respond to the needs of communities most affected by climate change.
As a consistent member of the Busia Community of Practice under the DaCCA programme, Baridi Kwa Baridi Women CBO values these engagements as important opportunities to contribute to evidence-based policy discussions, share community perspectives, and strengthen partnerships that promote climate resilience.
