Baridi Kwa Baridi CBO as part of the Busia County Peace Committee held their quarterly meeting on 9 September 2026 at the County Commissioners Hall to strengthen peacebuilding efforts and enhance preparedness as the county approaches the 2027 General Elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on the Committee\u2019s mandate and its role in promoting peace, identifying the underlying causes of conflict, supporting conflict resolution, promoting dialogue, and strengthening linkages between communities and government structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strengthening Peace Ahead of the Elections<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With Busia being a cosmopolitan county, the Committee underscored the importance of maintaining peaceful coexistence and strengthening mechanisms for early warning and early response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discussions highlighted the need for greater attention to potential drivers of election-related violence, including political tensions, hate speech, youth idleness and the misuse of political gatherings. Members emphasized that preventing conflict requires coordinated action across different sectors and meaningful engagement with communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Particular emphasis was placed on youth engagement, including making use of existing youth and boda boda structures to provide constructive opportunities for young people and strengthen their participation in peacebuilding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee further called for peace initiatives to be cascaded to the grassroots, allowing local communities to participate in identifying emerging concerns and developing appropriate responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building a Culture of Dialogue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The meeting emphasized the importance of political leaders and other stakeholders committing themselves to peaceful engagement. Peace charters, dialogue and responsible leadership were identified as important approaches to reducing tensions and preventing violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee also stressed the need to discourage hate speech and incitement, while ensuring that agreed resolutions are followed through and issues beyond the capacity of local structures are appropriately escalated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peace Work The initiative will bring together relevant stakeholders to promote peace, strengthen community engagement and reinforce collective responsibility for peaceful coexistence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting reaffirmed that sustainable peace requires the participation of government, communities, political leaders, faith-based actors, youth, civil society and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Busia moves towards the 2027 elections, the Peace Committee remains committed to building dialogue, strengthening community-based peace mechanisms and promoting a culture where differences are addressed peacefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peace is not only the absence of conflict, it is a shared responsibility that requires continuous dialogue, cooperation and action.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
