On 16 June 2026, Baridi Kwa Baridi Women CBO joined children, parents, community members, government representatives, civil society organizations and development partners at Katakwa School in Teso South, Busia County, to commemorate the Day of the African Child 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Day of the African Child is a day of reflection and action that honours the courage of the children of Soweto who, on 16 June 1976, stood up for their right to quality education and dignity. Their bravery continues to remind us that children\u2019s voices matter and that every child deserves protection, opportunities and a future free from exploitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s theme, \u201cEnsuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa,\u201d highlights the importance of recognizing water, sanitation and hygiene as fundamental rights. Clean water sustains life, safe sanitation protects dignity and proper hygiene promotes the health and well-being of every child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we celebrate the rights, resilience and potential of African children, we acknowledge the challenges faced by many children in Busia County in accessing clean and safe water. In some communities, children, especially girls, walk long distances in search of water, affecting their ability to attend school regularly and increasing their exposure to different forms of vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Limited access to water and sanitation is more than a development challenge; it can contribute to circumstances that place children at risk of exploitation, including child domestic work. When families struggle to meet basic needs, children are often forced to carry burdens that affect their education, safety and childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During this important commemoration, Baridi Kwa Baridi Women CBO reaffirmed its commitment to advancing child protection, promoting children\u2019s rights, and supporting efforts to end the exploitation of child domestic workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We extend our sincere gratitude to Freedom Fund for their continued support towards child protection initiatives and creating safer environments for vulnerable children. We also appreciate the county government departments, community leaders, schools, children, civil society organizations and all partners whose collaboration contributed to the success of this year\u2019s Day of the African Child celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together, we can build communities where every child has access to clean water, dignity, education and the opportunity to thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
