Recently on 18/08/2025, We attended a public Baraza that brought together community members, chief, assistant chiefs and village elders of Bukhayo West Ward, Matayos Sub county, Busia county, to address one of the silent but pressing issues affecting our children that is exploitative child domestic work and the importance of safeguarding children’s rights.

The Baraza provided a space for open dialogue where stories, experiences and concerns were shared honestly. Many community members acknowledged that child domestic work often hides in plain sight, taking away children’s opportunities to learn, play and thrive. Children engaged in this work are often exposed to long hours, heavy responsibilities, neglect and even abuse, leaving scars that affect them well into adulthood.

Our team sensitized the community on the importance of safeguarding children’s rights and emphasized that child domestic work is a form of exploitation that denies children their fundamental rights. Parents and guardians were encouraged to prioritize education and nurture their children’s talents, while leaders were urged to strengthen community reporting and referral systems to protect vulnerable children.

The Baraza also highlighted solutions. The members present were guided on how to seek support through existing programs and were introduced to alternative income-generating opportunities being championed under our “Not Invisible Anymore” project, funded by Freedom Fund which seeks to protect vulnerable children in Busia County and empower households with sustainable solutions.By empowering our children with technical skills in Carpentry,Tailoring, Beauty&Therapy and financial literacy,we reduce the pressure that often drives children into exploitative domestic work and also the option

What stood out most was the unity of purpose demonstrated at the Baraza. Participants not only committed to protecting children within their own homes but also pledged to become advocates in their neighborhoods by reporting cases of child exploitation, educating others and ensuring that no child is left behind.

This event reaffirmed our belief that real change begins at the community level.

Later in the day, we held a partner meeting with Childline Kenya, an organization renowned for their commitment to child protection through the national 116 Helpline. This toll-free number provides a safe, confidential and accessible platform for children and community members to report abuse, exploitation or neglect. Strengthening such partnerships ensures that survivors and families receive timely psychosocial support, referrals and justice.

At Baridi Kwa Baridi Women CBO, we will continue to stand with children because they are not invisible anymore.

👉 Take Action: If you witness or suspect a case of child exploitation, please report it immediately to the nearest Children’s Office, the Department of Gender, or call Childline Kenya’s 116 Helpline (toll-free).
